OK - I need your feedback. I'm taking a very important poll. Supposing that I get flown out for an in-person interview in the coming weeks, should I take my nose ring out for the interview?

i think you should remove it. respectfully dad. love you
NEVER!!! That was placed in a sacred moment among friends!!! If you take it out, what memories will we have?!! Does our friendship mean NOTHING?!!
On second thought... it probably wouldn't be a bad idea. I don't know many librarians with nose rings... I'll take you to get your belly button pierced instead... no one will ever know. ;)
Meg, don't you worry. Of course, I have no intention of taking it out permanently. It would be just for the interview. Hey, didn't Carrie take out her piercing? Maybe we need to have a little talk with her about the importance of scacred moments among friends :)
Once you actually have a job, you can consider the pros and cons at your particular library. Even though there are antidiscrimination laws out there, subconscious or not-so-subconscious attitudes have a way affecting decisions that are made. Think of which generation is hiring you. Again, I go bare nosed. :)
And then again, maybe this is a fleece you have to put out. If God wants you to have this position, the nose ring will make no difference. :)
(Does this mean I get 2 votes?) (Or 3 since I already posted?)
it's interesting that i've actually had more of my library people say that they think it would be OK to leave it in than people not affiliated w/libraries. i'm thinking that for the interview it would be better to err on the side of caution by taking it out, but unless there's a policy against it, i'll definitely be putting it back in.
karen - i agree that it's absurd to have to take it out. it's not like a small stud in my nose has any effect on my performance as a librarian. also, since i plan to keep it for the long run, it seems somewhat dishonest to take it out for the interview.
mom - sorry, it doesn't matter how many times you say i should take it out, you still only get one vote :)

Yeah, so that last post was me. I don't know why it posted as anonymous.
is it surprising that mom and pop are unanimously against the piercing?
Something to consider is this...when you work will you keep it in? Will that eventually be a problem??
but yes probably take it out -- and then surprise them with it when they are BEGGING you to work for them
PS -- I re-pierced by naval -- i've got the abs for it again :)

really mom -- you have to learn to play fairly -- just like everyone else you only get to vote once -- no cheating

it is part of who you are...an extension of your personality and attitude.
i say don't take it out.
