I recently learned about the band Ascend the Hill and heard their version of the song "Be Thou My Vision." The song itself is not new. It's an Old Irish text from the 6th century that wasn't translated into English until 1905. I really love this arrangement of the song. My favorite part though is the bridge, which isn't in the original version. It goes...

Oh God be my everything, be my delight

I just want to listen to that part of the song over and over again. I've included a link to the song below rather than embedding the clip because there's a bizarre deer head photo that's in the background. I can't look at it because it distracts me from the beauty of the song itself.

stuff white people like

Today I stumbled upon a hilarious blog: Stuff White People Like. It's a tongue-in-cheek look at white culture in America. I should clarify and say a sub-set of white culture in America. It's really looking at the highly educated, organic food eating, Prius driving, Indy film watching, NPR quoting part of white America.

Honestly, it reminded me of 90% of the people I've ever worked within academia either as a professional or a grad student. Now I definitely found myself in some of the posts too (e.g., graduate school, bottles of water, plays, wine, microbreweries, Wes Anderson films, tea, etc.), but even with the things I identified with, I could see the humor in.

All in all, it's a sharp, funny blog. I actually sat down and read all of the entries tonight. I usually can't do that with the blog of someone I don't know, but this is definitely worth taking the time to read.

If you're looking for a good film to see, I highly recommend Once (2006). It's an Irish film starring Glen Hansard (from the Irish band The Frames) and Markéta Irglová (a Czech singer).

The film is completely driven by the music and the two main characters. It's beautiful and honest and real, and absolutely worth seeing.

for the wine lovers

If you haven't seen it already, you totally need to check out Wine Library TV. It's all about wine, wine, and more wine. Gary Vaynerchuk, who hosts the show and is director of operations for wine library, is hilarious and totally knows his wine. The whole purpose of the site is to make wine more accessible and less elitist. He usually taste tests 3 to 4 wines and talks about why they're good or why they aren't. It's very entertaining.

But really it makes me want to buy wine, to drink wine with friends... by myself... with food.... not with food...

Anyway, if you love, like, or are just curious about wine, you should check out the site.

When I lived in Reno, Living Stones was still fairly small (it only held one service each weekend; now it holds three). Before I left, Donald and Ricky would take turns leading worship. Now I'm sure there are numerous worship leaders in the rotation, but I can't really say for sure since it's been a while since I've been there.

I really excited because Donald's band, Anchordown, which started at Living Stones, actually produced a full-length CD last year. About a week ago, they were one of six finalists in a band competition down in Texas out of about 175 bands that entered the contest. They won! Big congratulations to them! I guess as a prize they'll be recording a single and a music video. Crazy, huh?

Anyway, you should definitely check out their music. They have some of their songs online here and here. If you really like them, I would buy the CD - no, I'm not getting any kick backs for this ;) You could even get them in iTunes.
