I've been thinking about this lately for some pretty obvious reasons, and I've decided that being the new person at work is very much like being the new kid at school.
the new kid at school:
Everyone knows your name right away, but you struggle for weeks to remember who's who.
the new person at work:
Everyone knows your name right away, but you struggle for weeks to remember who's who.
the new kid at school:
Other kids ask you to sit by them at lunch and play with them at recess.
the new person at work:
Your new co-workers will take turns taking you to lunch and ask you if you want to join their book club.
the new kid at school:
After a while, your novelty as the new kid wears off, and the other kids no longer flock to you as if you had magical powers (that is unless you've been deemed popular).
the new person at work:
After a while, your novelty as the new person in the office wears off, and your co-workers let you make your own lunch plans.
the new kid at school:
Even though you're making new friends, you still miss your old friends and feel lonely once and a while.
the new person at work:
Even though you're constantly surrounded by co-workers, you still miss your old friends and feel lonely once and a while.

I'm thinking that telling you that "This, too, will pass" will be of no comfort to you. I wish there was some way to magically jump you past all the "new kid" phases and into the "I'm comfortable with where I am for now" phase. :)
