computer woes

I've had my computer ever since I started my first grad degree (read: almost 5 years). I know that's practically a dinosaur for a computer, but I haven't had many problems with it at all.

However, recently it's started doing this thing where when it falls asleep after being left idle, sometimes I can't get it to wake back up. The light on the hard drive stays steady and the fan continues to run, which makes me think that the processor isn't shutting off for sleep mode or something like that. I'm no computer expert, so if that's totally off the wall, someone who's more computer savvy is welcome to correct me on that.

If I turn the computer off and then start it back up, it runs like normal, but I can never be sure if it's going to sleep or go comatose if I leave it sit for too long.

So my question is should I take the computer in (& possibly upgrade the processor, memory, etc.) or should I just replace it? Part of me would love to get a laptop, but another part of me doesn't really want to spend the money on a new computer right now. Help!

It's a desktop, right? You can change your power management settings so that it doesn't try to go to standby at all.

A fresh install of your operating system would probably fix this just as easily as anything else.

Email for more details :)

Go for the laptop!! You can carry it everywhere! You'll be able to blog in bed, in the kitchen, in the bathtub! WHEREVER!!

bathtub? ummm..... methinks laptops won't last long when blogging is done in bathtub. At least in MY world! :)

Lindsey practically has this fixed for you, but i was going to say that i had the exact same problem with my computer when it was new and just changing settings so it's not using as much power at one time and making sure it was always cool (more of a laptop thing) fixed it.
